Course Description
Managing Uncertainty and Complexity of Emerging Economies and New Technologies (INTL-913-0)
1.00 Credit
Description:
This course counts toward the following majors: International Business, Management & Organizations. The global business arena is changing along a number of critical dimensions with increasing complexity, uncertainty and volatility. Contributing factors include globalization of markets, technology, information, standards, supply and production, and new international competition. New, potentially game-changing technologies are not only emerging but converging, requiring new forms of design and production and new skills to challenge current processes and functional divisions.
As developing countries capture more and more of the commodity part of products, firms are forced to venture into new, less familiar and less "Westernized" markets and to increase attention to total customer solutions with an emphasis on service as a fundamental part of strategy. This entails forging more sophisticated networks of alliances and reevaluating core competencies and the boundaries of the business. To establish more solid global positions and respond to growing pressures to address social and environmental concerns, companies are also incorporating sustainable development in their planning. Within this dynamic environment, top companies recognize that risk management must go beyond high-profile security issues considered in isolation. This course will introduce the latest tools that industry is using to assess critical underlying and interconnected risk factors.
Corporate guest lecturers, live cases and a series of interactive simulations targeting different sectors and regions will challenge students' assumptions and push them to apply what they have learned in new and more integrated ways.
The course counts toward MORS and International Business majors and will have value for all students, including MMM and GIM trip participants. GIM projects can be the basis for group projects in this class.
